Building puppets needs a different mindset: while the puppet player has to face the challenge of an already made puppet, the puppet maker has to define the type of puppet, its features and the kind of expression it should have.
Once these things are decided, aspects such as the distance to the audience, the capabilities of the puppet player, the sturdiness and simplicity of the puppet, all need to be considered in order to choose both right materials and tools.
Depending on what type of material is chosen, the building process can differ very much. Building a puppet can take hours or weeks. Some materials are more forgiving than others.
While the workshop for puppet technic teaches you how to get the best out of an existing puppet by discovering its technical and poetic qualities and flaws, this workshop teaches you how to approach the process of building a puppet.
Depending on the time available we can either create a puppet relatively quickly or delve into some more time consuming techniques and materials in order to build a puppet. Both results can be used effectively on a stage.
